Siân Wingate

President, ILANZ

Sian Wingate is an in-house lawyer, a law firm founder and legal technology business owner who is passionate about the value of community and how it helps people to develop and thrive.

Sian has a range of interests and leverages different community support structures to build and to maintain these.

As president of ILANZ (In-House Lawyers Association of New Zealand), Siân volunteers for the NZ in-house community.  She has driven a lot of change in her two-year tenure to curate more kanohi ki te kanohi interaction with the member base as she believes face-to-face interaction is the key to supporting each other in the legal profession. Always keen to listen to this community, Siân responded to requests from members and spearheaded the design and launch of a new skills & development programme for In-House counsel in NZ. Siân is helped by the wonderful, open and caring in-house community to design, deliver and promote this flagship offering.

As founder and director of, Siân offers the new or early stage business community in NZ a coaching service to build capability to manage the legal elements of running their business. This is alongside an affordable online legal store for key documents needed. Sian uses the traditional chamber of commerce and local networking community to develop this business.

As creator of Siân offers tradespeople an affordable, accessible step-by-step course on how to get set up and what legal terms to use to avoid common legal pitfalls. A legal document store is also housed in this space for tradies to gain access to clear, simple terms to use for their trades business. Sian uses the Instagram community to help her to bring this service to the tradeperson community.

Wingspan is Siân’s recent community initiative for NZ lawyers new to sole counsel or who work as contracting lawyers to have a safe and supportive environment to get started out and thrive. This is a free, private group to ensure that those going it alone or venturing into a new way of working have a community to turn to for support and to share ‘how to’ tips. Siân uses the Facebook community to help her to manage this.

By day Siân works as senior in-house counsel for Ultrafast Fibre Limited and squeezes in the time for her other pursuits above by a combination of good time management, using technology and leveraging her great community of whanaua, fellow ILANZ committee members and great lawyer friends to help her.
