Marama Broughton

Manager, System Advice Team, Crown Law | Taranaki, Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti, Ngāti Porou, Ngāpuhi

Marama is a skilled public sector lawyer who works on Māori Development, Māori Crown Relations, Treaty Settlements, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi issues. She leads a team of talented, dedicated, and experienced Crown Counsel at Te Tari Ture o te Karauna Crown Law. They provide advice and guidance for lawyers and decision-makers across the public service and manage systemic legal risks, trends, and developments.

Marama has a conjoint degree in Laws and Commerce (majoring in Māori Business) from Victoria University of Wellington. She also recently completed a full immersion Te Reo Māori Diploma at Te Wānanga o Raukawa. Marama is an active member of Te Hunga Rōia Māori, the Māori Law Society, and a founding member and Manukura (leader) of Te Kura Huna, a group of Māori legal practitioners in the public sector. In 2023 she was highly commended in the In-house Lawyers Association New Zealand’s Lawyer of the Year category and was a finalist for the Innovation Award.
